Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP)

Entry Point!

Federal Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP)

The Federal Workforce Recruitment Program is an annual event, which is the result of a joint effort between the Disabled Student Service Office (DSSO) and the Office of Career Services. Each year, when application materials become available, the Disabled Student Service Office (DSSO) notify students registered with our office, via email and my spreading the word out. Interested students then contact Career Services office for an application packet. Instructions for completion and submission are then disseminated. Career Services personnel will provide resume critiquing and interview preparation at no cost to UTEP students who participate.

The program works by finding qualified college students with disabilities through offices like ours, and then inviting them to interview with the WRP recruiter who will be coming to the campus on a scheduled day each year. If the student is selected by the recruiter to be part of the program, the student's resume will be placed in a data base which will then be seen by hundreds of potential government and private sector employers for a period of one year. The employers will then contact the students directly to set up an interview for possible jobs and/or internships. Interview slots may be reserved only UTEP students, and recent graduates.

Again, the WRP takes place each year, and notice will be given via email to students registered with the Disabled Student Service Office (DSSO). Contact Betsy Castro-Duarte office of Career Services at (915) 747-5640 or DSSO for more information via phone, 915-747-5148.

Entry Point!

The Entry Point! Program at UTEP is co-sponsored by Disabled Student Service Office (DSSO) and Career Services so that students with disabilities can apply their skills in a real-world setting in competitive summer internships.

Entry Point! Is a program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offering outstanding paid, 10-week internships and semester Co-opsfor Students with Disabilities in Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, and some fields of Business. To meet the challenge of the competitive global economy in the new millennium, private industry and government research agencies must expand the pool of technical talent.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has developed unique partnerships with IBM, NASA, Merck, NOAA, Google, Lockheed Martin, CVS, Proctor and Gamble. NAVAIR and university science laboratories to meet their human resources needs. Working with its partners, AAAS identifies and screens undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities who are pursuing degrees in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and some fields of business, and places them in paid summer internships.

The Entry Point! Internships are particularly valuable because of the availability of mentoring and assistive technology, facilitating the entry and advancement of individuals with significant disabilities into competitive employment and research at all levels.

Don't limit yourself by thinking only of summer employment near your campus or your permanent residence. As a student with a disability, you have already met and overcome many challenges. A summer internship in a new location will challenge you in unexpected ways. The environment may be very different from your hometown or university and you may have to live away from your family and friends. As you learn about other people and other ways of doing things, you will learn more about yourself. When you finish your degree, you will have a successful internship on your record and the experience of working in a different location. Come and Try it out.

Qualifying students must:

•             Be full-time undergraduate or graduate students

•             Be a Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Business, or Computer Science or Finance major

•             Have a B average GPA (or higher)

•             Be a U.S. citizen

If you meet the above criteria, you might be selected for a position next summer where you will benefit from a mentor and receive competitive pay.  There is no charge for students to apply or participate.
