Providing equal access to students with disabilities is a University wide responsibility. Instructors play a key role in responding to the instructional needs of all students and that also requires their active participation.
The following is a brief list of the steps/tips faculty members can use to ensure access for disabled students who are enrolled in their classes:
- Allow Sign Language Interpreters appropriate seating within your classroom if you have deaf or hard of hearing students who require this service.
- Treat the student with a disability as a STUDENT AT UTEP
- Be willing to work with students to address their accommodation issues and Announce in your syllabus “that students who have or suspect a disability should come to DSSO to request needed accommodations”
- Choose videos that are captioned
- Provide course materials in alternative format such as Braille, large print, audiocassette, etc
- Allow students to use auxiliary aids such as an Assistive Listening Device, a laptop, a tape recorder, etc
- Post lecture notes on the Web or assist students in locating a volunteer, classmate note-taker if requested by the student
- Address questions/comments to the student, not the interpreter, CART provider, or assistant
- Speak to the student, they are the best guide to what they need
- Allow for flexible attendance requirement, as appropriate
- For questions or concerns about accommodations and how they apply to your course curriculum, contact DSSO
