U.S Department of State medical insurance requirements for Exchange Visitors Program

 Below is a summary of the requirements,  click here for the full text.

An Exchange visitor is a foreign national selected by a sponsor to participate in an exchange program, and is issued a J-1 visa.  An accompanying spouse and any unmarried children under 21 years of age may
apply for J-2 visas, with the permission of the sponsor. 

Exchange visitors are required to have medical insurance in effect for himself/herself and any dependents in J-visa status for the duration of the program.  Some sponsors provide the required insurance for their participants.  Other sponsors may allow the visitor to make personal arrangements or may help to identify insurance carriers.

A.   Minimum Coverage  - Insurance shall cover:  (1) medical benefits of at least $50,000 per person per accident or illness; (2) repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500; and (3) expenses associated with medical evacuation in the amount of $10,000.

B. Additional terms – A policy secured to fulfill the insurance requirements shall not have a deductible that exceeds $500 per accident or illness, and must meet other standards specified in the regulations.

C.   Maintenance of Insurance – Willful failure on the part of the exchange visitor to maintain the required insurance will result in the termination of the visitor’s exchange program.

J-1 scholars and their families are able to purchase this insurance from any provider. However, the provider below allows students to charge the payment to their UTEP account if it is done before census day each semester.
