Insurance

All international students on non-immigrant visas living in the U.S. must enroll in the UT System approved comprehensive health insurance plan.  The plan provides certain basic coverage features that meet standards required by the United States Department of State regulations.  To assist you, the Health Insurance Premium, known as the “HINS” incidental fee will be included on your Tuition/Fee statement.  You may qualify for a waiver of the “HINS” incidental fee only under one of the following limited exceptions:

  • Employee of UTEP.   Must be employed at 50% time (20hrs) or more per week.  Appointment must be 4½ months or more.
  • Mandatory Employer Plan
  • Mandatory Government Sponsored Plan
  • Pre-Admission Continuing Coverage

If you qualify under one of these exceptions, your health insurance coverage must meet all applicable rules and regulations.  The following are the minimum requirements as established by the UT System Board of Regents and the United States Department of State.

    • Medical Benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness.
    • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500.
    • Medical Evacuation in amount of $10,000.
    • Deductible not to exceed $550 per accident or illness
    • May require a waiting period for pre-existing conditions which is reasonable as determined by current industry standards.
    • May include provisions for co-insurance under the terms of which the employee may be required to pay up to 25 percent of the covered benefits per accident and the covered benefits per illness.
    • Shall not unreasonably exclude coverage for perils inherent to the activities of the exchange programs in which the student participates.
    • Must be underwritten by an insurance corporation having an A.M. Best Rating of “A-“ or above, or a Standard and Poor’s Claims-paying Ability of “A” or above, and Insurance solvency International LTD (ISI) rating of  “A” or above or Weiss Research Inc. rating of “B” or above.

If you have medical insurance coverage through another plan that meets these requirements, you must take your insurance policy to the Office of Human Resources to receive your “HINS” fee waiver.

Students from Mexico are exempt from the medical insurance requirement, although, it is recommended medical insurance coverage is obtained.
