· Disclose disability to DSSO and provide documentation to verify the existence of a disability and the need for an accommodation
· Initiate requests for specific accommodations in a timely manner, preferably two weeks before the start of semester by contacting DSSO so that accommodation request letter can be prepared by the first day of class
o The student should schedule a conference with the professor NO LATER than the second week of classes to clarify any accommodation needs or questions pertaining to the classroom environment or course assignments.
o If the student requests services later in the semester, the student should discuss an accommodation need with faculty as soon as possible
· Follow procedures with faculty and DSSO in order to get the appropriate accommodation
· Provide for their own personal independent living or other personal disability-related needs. For example, coordinating services of personal care attendants or acquiring homework assistance are the student’s responsibility and not the responsibility of DSSO.
· Meet academic and technical standards required for admission or participation in the educational program or activity as well as adhere to the UTEP student code of conduct
o Every student is held to the same high standards in these areas
o The university is not obligated to provide an accommodation that will require a substantial change to course, activity, program, policy, or procedure
· Attend classes regularly
o Class attendance is a reasonable expectation for college students
o If student is unable to attend classes regularly because of a disability, he/she should contact the professor and DSSO immediately. Special arrangement may be made on an individual basis.
· Bring concerns about accommodations or services to DSSO in a timely manner. The student should follow established grievance policy and procedures to resolve their concern. DSSO is usually able to help correct problems as they arise. However, if efforts to resolve the problem are unsuccessful at the university, students have the right to pursue further grievance through section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and/or the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
