Eligibility For Service Minimize    

A student may be eligible for reader services if the student has a substantial limitation in:

 

·         Visual acuity (less than 20/100)

·         Reading comprehension ability (more than 1 standard deviation below the mean in academic)

·         Visual processing or visual-perceptual ability that affect reading ability (more than 1 standard deviation below the mean)

  • Other conditions where DSSO determines accommodation is reasonable and appropriate
   
Reader Services For Coursework Materials Minimize    

·         Reader services are assigned as either large print/Braille, books-on-tape, MP3 audio file, a reader, adaptive technology and/or auxiliary aides

 

·         Type of accommodation is determined by barrier and/or limitation of student

 

·         Student can convert materials into Braille, tactile image or an audio file on their own by going to the Special Needs Room or the Library Technology Center on the 3rd floor of the UTEP Library

   
Materials in Alternative Format Minimize    

A student may be eligible for this accommodation if they have a substantial limitation:

 

  • Visual acuity (less than 20/100)

§         Visual perceptual ability

§         Reading comprehension (more than 1.5 standard deviations below the mean in academic area)

§         Other conditions that DSSO determines to be reasonable and appropriate

   
Books-on-Tape Minimize    

Are ordered from the Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFBD), and may take up to 2 weeks to arrive at DSSO

 

·         Students eligible for books-on-tape are encouraged to register for classes early before the start of the semester to ensure books-on-tape are available the first week of class

 

·         Books-on-tape not picked up within the first three weeks of the start of the semester (fall/spring) or the first week during summer sessions will be returned to RFBD and they will not be reordered within that semester again

   
MP3 Audio File Minimize    

  • DSSO will purchase copy of student’s textbook and have binding removed so pages can be scanned and converted to an MP3 audio file
  • DSSO will provide audio file of textbook on CD to student
  • Student will be asked to sign agreement indicating that audio file will be used for homework purposes only and not duplicated or distributed in any way

    Reader (DSSO staff member) Minimize    

  • Student is responsible for providing copy of course syllabus to reader
  • Student needs to discuss due dates of reading material(s) with reader
