The purpose of the Recreational Sports Clubs is to provide all students an opportunity for extramural competition in activities sponsored by the Recreational Sports Department. Only clubs involved in active recreational pursuits, competitive sports, and/or those which foster life time leisure values, are included in the definition of "Recreational Sport Clubs." The emphasis is on extramural competition.
Sport Clubs are essentially student organizations administered and directed by the student members. Sport Clubs will establish, develop, and promote the interest and skills of their members in particular sports/activities.
Sport Clubs are governed by the rules and regulations established for all recognized student organizations on campus. The Recreational Sports Department Sports Club handbook is designed to serve as a supplement to the handbook for registered student organizations.
Although Sport Clubs receive some funding from the Recreational Sports Department, each club should strive to become financially self-sufficient.
Our two competitive clubs belong to a national affiliation. The Men’s Soccer Club belongs to the NIRSA Collegiate Soccer Club. As part of that club they competed against New Mexico State University, Arizona State University, and New Mexico Tech. The Fencing Club is a member of the United States Fencing Association. Their members travel to San Marcos, TX, Santa Fe, NM and Los Alamos, NM. The club members compete at these events to try and qualify for the National Tournament that is held during the summer. There are also two other clubs that remain active on the recreational level. They are the badminton and water polo clubs. As organizations they are allowed to reserve the facilities on a monthly basis to hold their practices or competitions. There is also a request from another organization that wants to create a Cricket Club effective as of September 1, 2005. They are interested in becoming a club to help promote the game of cricket and to open up its doors to other students that want to play this sport.
